What is the Butterfly Cardi?

Not all babies enjoy having their arms swaddled in. That's where the Butterfly Cardi comes in. This innovative design allows you to keep your baby's arms close to their face, with the hands up option. Additionally, it can be used as a transition aid for when your baby is ready to move into arms-free sleeping. You can simply wear it over your baby's swaddle to help them adjust to the change.

The Butterfly Cardi is made from Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton that is non-toxic and gentle on irritable skin. All ergoPouch fabrics are dyed with non-toxic water based dyes. The Hip Harness Jersey Sleeping Bag is reviewed by the Eczema Association of Australasia (EAA) as a skin-friendly product.

Hands-up sleeping

Some newborns find comfort sleeping with their hands up near their face. If your baby falls into this category, simply wear the Cocoon Swaddle Bag (sold separately) with arms-out, pop the Butterfly Cardi on over the top, and contain the hands in the butterfly wing pockets in a position near the face. This is safe from birth, when using our 0-3 month size. If your newborn baby changes sleep style regularly, the Cocoon Swaddle Bag paired with the Butterfly Cardi gives you three sleep options to switch between (arms-in, arms-out and hands-up).

Transitioning out of a swaddle

If your baby has been sleeping swaddled with their arms in or up, and begins to show signs of rolling, it is time to transition them to arms-out sleeping for their safety. The Butterfly Cardi is innovatively designed to be a transition aid worn over your baby’s swaddle or sleeping bag, to help them transition to arms-out with minimal sleep interruptions and maximum sleep comfort. The 0.2 TOG rating makes it a light layer suitable for use over any sleeping bag in any room temperature.

Who is the Butterfly Cardi for?

This little life-saver is for newborn babies who either prefer to sleep with their hands up near their face, or are transitioning out of a swaddle and into a sleeping bag. If using for the latter, the arm pockets help ease the position by slowing transitioning from arms-in swaddle, to arms in a hands-up butterfly position, to arms fully out over 7-10 days.

Can I use it over any swaddle or sleeping bag?

Yes. We suggest using it with the arms-out swaddle or sleeping bag you intend your arms-out sleeper to be using at the end of the process. It is designed to be used over the top of our Cocoon Swaddle Bags (arms out), Layers or Sleeping Bag (ages 3m+). In hot weather, customers have also told us they use it with just a nappy and singlet on for sleep.

How do I use it transition to arms-out?

Will adding arm warmers or butterfly cardi increase the overall TOG of the pouches?

The Butterfly Cardi is a bolero style jacket designed to be used over any arms-out, sleeveless pouches. It's ideal for babies who wake due to a drop in temperature during the night, and with their
arms feeling a little cool to the touch. The sleeves are 1.0 TOG rated whilst the body is a thinner fabric akin to a 0.2 TOG. This means it will provide some extra warmth, without causing the risk of overheating.

Beautiful product and great quality
Beautiful product and great quality - unfortunately too small for my newborn. My 3 week old baby has very long arms and they did not fit inside the 0-3 month size cardi, and the cardi only just fit across his chest. I would happily recommend the product to but I would suggest buying a size up if you have a bigger baby

Fits wrong on all places
Both this as my tot prefers to have his arms out. Unfortunately it fits so poorly on all places when the arms are closed in, arm cover is not big enough to fit his arms and the torso is so loose that it lifts to his face-covering his mouth and nose doesnt feel safe at all. It didnt work for us, it might fit other body types though.
