How to Use the HugMe Blanket

Learn how to use the HugMe Blanket for safe newborn sleeping
The HugMe Blanket is an innovative, TOG rated alternative to blankets in the bassinet and cot. A firm-fitting mattress sleeve, the HugMe Blanket follows Red Nose safe sleep guidelines, and is independently tested and approved by INPAA. This guide will help you understand how to use the HugMe Blanket to safely and comfortably sleep your newborn, without the risk of becoming untucked.
How to Use the HugMe Blanket
1. Choose between the 0.2 TOG or 1.0 TOG side on top. 0.2 TOG provides a looser, cooler layer in a warm room. 1.0 TOG provides a firmer, warmer layer in a moderate room.
2. Dress your baby in their regular sleepwear and swaddle. Refer to the HugMe Blanket Dressing Guide included with every new Sheet for guidance on how to choose the right TOGs and layers for your baby.
3. Unzip the HugMe Blanket and slip it over the end of the mattress. The variable zips allow you to adjust the firmness to find the perfect fit for your baby's size or strength of startle reflex.
4. Lay your baby under the open folds with their feet touching the end of the bassinet or cot. Fasten the zip according to the desired firmness. When fastened, you should easily fit two fingers between the Sheet and your baby.
5. Ensure the Sheet does not sit higher than the middle of your baby's chest. The length of the Sheet can be adjusted by tucking excess under the bottom of the mattress. As your baby grows taller, continue to adjust the length of the Sheet.
6. Unfasten the zip to take your baby out of the Sheet. Discontinue use once your baby shows signs of rolling.
7. Always sleep your baby in a safe sleep environment.
Let’s check the fit!
The HugMe Blanket is designed to be a firm-fitting mattress sleeve, and snug-fitting to help comfort against startle reflex. The fit of the HugMe Blanket is important for safety. How can you check the right fit?
1. Ensure baby's feet are touching the end of the bassinet/cot. The top of the HugMe Blanket should not be positioned any higher than mid-way up baby's chest. When in use, the HugMe Blanket shouldn't pull your bassinet/cradle or cot/crib mattress up.
2. If the HugMe Blanket is coming up higher than mid-chest, you can tuck excess fabric at the end, under the mattress. Adjust as baby grows.
3. The HugMe Blanket should fit firmly across baby's body, but not be constrictive. On the tightest setting (1.0 TOG, second zip), you should comfortably fit two finger widths between the HugMe Blanket and baby's chest. Any tighter is not advised in order to not restrict breathing.
4. On the loosest setting (0.2 TOG side, first zip), the HugMe Blanket should still fit firmly across baby's body to provide comfort against startle reflex. If you are finding the sheet is loose and easily bunches when on, try adjusting to the tighter fitting zip.
5. The 1.0 TOG side of the HugMe Blanket is a firmer fit than the 0.2 TOG side. If your baby has a strong startle reflex, we suggest using the 1.0 TOG side up. Discontinue use of the HugMe Blanket once baby starts to show signs of rolling.
